Tempt your taste buds by learning more about the origins of the scrumptious pancake and some ways you can celebrate at home and here with us at T.C. Eggington’s!

A Brief History of the Pancake

Aren’t pancakes just the best? (Well, aside from the egg, of course.) Pancakes can be made in various ways and are found in cuisines worldwide. These delicacies have been enjoyed for centuries, even Otzi the Iceman was found to have a pancake variation as one of his last meals. Pancakes were enjoyed by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, who enjoyed them with toppings such as honey, sesame, and cheese.

Pancake Varieties

There are many names for pancakes and many variations to boot. Pancakes can vary immensely by region and can be served in many different ways. A few note-worthy options include:

Johnny Cakes – These delicious alternatives to the common pancake are made with cornmeal as opposed to flour and originate from the indigenous people of North America.

Latke – These mouth-watering potato pancakes are of Yiddish origin and are often served with cheese, onion, or zucchini.

Crepes – Crepes are very thin pancakes of French origin. They can be served sweet or savory and topped with jams, eggs, vegetables, or whipped cream, depending on the variety! (Please don’t mix all of those toppings together!)

Flapjacks – Flapjacks are similar to a pancake but can also be baked!

Hotcakes and Griddlecakes – Pancakes with fancy names.

Crumpet – Our friends in the UK enjoy crumpets, small griddle breads filled with holes. They are similar to an English muffin.
